You probably wonder how to find your first job as a Junior Java Developer? I will write straight, it is not easy to find your first job as a junior Java programmer nowadays. Why this is so and how to find your first job in spite of this, I will write in a moment. You definitely need to be patient, good portfolio and good CV. I will try to present the reality as it is now. In addition, I invite you to read the article How to look for a first job as a Junior Java Developer?.

Why is it not easy to find your first job as a Junior Java Developer? In my opinion, the main reason for this is the large number of people who want to become a junior Java developer. You're probably about to ask, "But how? After all, everyone says companies need Java developers right now.” That's right, but now every month there's a new group of people who complete Java Bootcamps and send their resumes to companies. The recruiter, looking through the CV, can create two groups, one consisting of students, e.g. after IT studies, and the second group consisting of people who have completed Bootcamp. Unfortunately, "priority" may be given to students.

What's wrong with a resume after bootcamp? I think that the main problem is the lack of IT knowledge, which is necessary for the position of Junior Java Developer. IT knowledge acquired, for example, during computer studies, and is, for example, knowledge of operating systems, computer networks, even if only in theory. I think that for a recruiter, a CV in which, among several different professional (non-technical) experiences, there is only information about the completed Bootcamp may not be a reason to establish contact and cooperation.

In that case, what should you do to make the experience included in your CV help you find a job as a Junior Java developer? It would be ideal to create an unconventional - out of the box - project that will stand out from other similar CRUD projects - Prisons of CRUD template in own portfolio and real-project.

Unconventional Java portfolio project, external API, Java Sound, Speak Random Chuck Norris Jokes; TRAILER

If we lack certificates confirming our skills, we can do a course with a certification path at Coursera, I wrote more about it in Useful books and websites for learning Java. It is also worth exploring the knowledge of computer science, operating systems and computer networks: Khan Academy – Computer Science, Wikipedia - Computer Science, Stanford University - Computer Science 101, Coursera – Computer Communications.

In terms of an unconventional project. I assume you already have basic knowledge of Java. In this case, the project may combine two different existing API provided by REST. Then we provide our own REST API for a mobile application, e.g. on Android. The project will consist of a server application and a mobile application that connects to it. We can, for example, create a mobile application that will prepare a proposal for clothes for the day for the current weather and location. It sounds complicated, but it's not really. In short, we can use:
Spring Framework – base for server application,
Zalando API - Clothes API,
AccuWeather – Weather API,
Android - Mobile App.

To sum up, in my opinion, the combination of Java language training (online, Bootcamp), IT knowledge and an unconventional project increases the chances of getting your first job as a Junior Java Developer.
